So I watched Death in Venice last night as a few friends along with my guidebook had recommended it. What no one mentioned, or even hinted at, though was the massive paedophilic overtones of the entire film, which I found to be a just little too bizarre. It was almost comical in how ridiculously overdramatic it was, reminded me of a Monkey Dust sketch. One thing it did handle well though was Ballardian theme of protagonist Professor Aschenbach becoming evermore trapped in a city, and the far more interesting disease-mystery subplot. Other than that I dunno 6/10? Too heavy handed with Mahler’s Addegio for Strings also.
